Who we are

Artivist.Media is an independent artivism and research project based in the San Diego–Tijuana borderlands on Kumeyaay land. Our website address is https://www.artivist.media. Contact: info@artivist.media.

What data we collect and why

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection. An anonymized string created from your email address (a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to check whether you are using it; the Gravatar service privacy policy is available at https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website (for example, alongside a comment), you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract location data from images on the website.

Embedded content from other websites

Pages on this site embed video and media content from third-party platforms, including YouTube (youtube.com / youtube-nocookie.com), Vimeo (vimeo.com), and Dropbox (dropbox.com). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if you had visited the other website directly. These platforms may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with the embedded content, including tracking your interaction if you have an account and are logged in to that platform. Their privacy policies, not ours, govern that collection:

  • YouTube / Google: https://policies.google.com/privacy
  • Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/privacy
  • Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/privacy

Email updates (newsletter)

When you sign up for updates through our signup form, we collect your email address for one purpose: sending you Artivist.Media dispatches. The list is managed and delivered through MailerLite (MailerLite Limited), which processes your email address on our behalf and may set its own service cookies when you interact with signup forms or emails; MailerLite’s privacy policy is at https://www.mailerlite.com/legal/privacy-policy. We do not sell or share the list, we don’t send ads, and every email includes an unsubscribe link that takes effect immediately. You can also ask us to remove you at any time by writing to info@artivist.media.

Cookies

If you leave a comment, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so you don’t have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment; they last one year. Site administrators who log in also receive login and screen-option cookies. This site does not set advertising cookies.

Analytics

We do not currently run a third-party analytics service on this site.

Server logs

Like nearly all websites, our hosting infrastructure keeps standard server logs (IP address, request URL, timestamp, user agent) for security and troubleshooting. These are retained on a rolling basis and are not used to profile visitors.

Email

If you write to us, we keep the correspondence as long as needed to respond and for our records. Outgoing site email is delivered via an SMTP service; message contents pass through that provider in transit.

Who we share your data with

We do not sell, rent, or trade visitor data. Data is shared only with the technical service providers described above (hosting, email delivery, and the embedded-content platforms you choose to interact with), and where required by law. As a project committed to press freedom and the safety of our communities, we aim to collect as little identifying information as possible in the first place.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely so we can recognize and approve follow-up comments automatically. For users who register on the website (if any), we store the personal information they provide in their user profile; users can see, edit, or delete that information at any time (except their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Your rights over your data

If you have left comments on this site, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. Send requests to info@artivist.media.

Where your data is sent

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Our hosting is provided by a U.S.-based cloud provider, so data is processed in the United States.
